About Us...

What's in a name?...we realize that the name of our business is somewhat unconventional... certainly not as formal as many others in this field. Over the years we have gotten both favorable and questioning reviews about our moniker... we are comfortable with it and we feel it is appropriate as it reflects the positive upbeat attitude that we bring to our projects.
Even though our name is lighthearted, we are serious about our work and approach all our projects, both large and small, with the same intent... to help our clients assess their goals and provide a successful solution for achieving them.
Our projects range from room makeovers to new construction... even though the scope can vary widely, we recognize that the most important aspect of our service is gaining a clients trust... so that they realize that we are their advocates in this process and that they can depend on us to have their interests as our priority.
There are 2 of us... we are life partners and business partners... as business partners we combine our different and mutual skillsets as needed in our approach to each project

Michelle

" I am an interior stylist... I am creative, artsy, and have an innate sense of balance... I love color and texture... I like to create spaces for people that they will love... rooms need to move into each other... to create a flow... an ease... I create warmth."
" I meet with clients... I talk and ask questions... I get a read on what they are looking for... I find out what they like... their style."
" I determine whether we are a "good fit"... I have to get them and they have to be comfortable with me... otherwise it won't work. "
" My job is to use my talents to create their style... creating a home space is personal."
" Although I enjoy working independently on behalf of my clients, I am also comfortable with their input and involvement to whatever degree they desire."
" I consider what I do exciting and I have fun... and I want my clients to have fun as well."

Michael...

" I am design oriented... I pay close attention to details... both visual and mechanical... so that in the end I am comfortable with the execution of the finished project."
" I am also a hands on person and frequently get involved in the fabrication demands when needed or desired."
" Ultimately my main goal is quality control... whether it is purely mechanical or combination of mechanical and aesthetics, I rely mainly on my instincts and experience to guide me forward... along with advice from trusted advisors."

Michelle and Michael brought joy to our project. They helped us make good decisions, take good risks with creativity, solved problems well as they (inevitably) arose, and generally came through for us. We love them and love our home all the more for their efforts. How lucky we were to have them on our project!

Mike and Michelle are the tops. They can do almost anything. Michelle has a keen sense of the aesthetic and an instinctive ability to create an atmosphere. She has designed color schemes for several of my homes including paint, window treatments and fabric as well as the incredibly difficult task of hanging paintings. Mike has solved installation problems with ingenuity and has provided graphic designs for my store. There is always the feeling of satisfaction and delight at the conclusion of their efforts. They are an unbeatable team.

Michelle,
I have learned a lot from you over the years. You have a very keen perception and realistic view. The service you provide to people is much more than the visual results. You help create a "feeling" for someone in their home. It's invisible-but it's everything.
In success and happiness,
Hal Allen

I first saw the work of Mike and Michelle in a house they had renovated for friends of mine. It was the bathroom that got me. Two identical marble-topped vanities, built by Mike, flanked opposing walls. The shower, running the width of the far end of the room, completed the symmetry. Light flooded in from a long, horizontal window at eye level, providing a view while high enough. to pr0vide privacy. So; when it was my turn to decorate, I turned to Michelle.
Michelle has been in this line of work in this area for years, and she knows where they sell what, and who can best do the work that you need done. This is vital when you are operating in a rural area.
Michelle generally works with a free rein, and she was surprised to find that I expected to participate in design decisions. But, if you're doing it right, decorating is always a learning experience, as this was for both of us, and many of the elements and details that I treasure most were Michelle's doing.
Though my cabinetry was installed by the builder, Mike and Michelle worked as a team to install all the window treatments, and together they built and upholstered the valences.
Lastly, we occasionally came across some mechanical snags. It was Mike who figured out how to hang the heavy, wall-sized drapes in the master bedroom by reinforcing the curtain hardware from the attic above. He did the work himself.
Mike and Michelle are creative and reliable; they are problem solvers, and always a pleasure to work with.

I had Michelle help us with the renovation of our commercial building in the Village of Chatham, including the addition of a new residential apartment space. This project was over 4000 square feet of commercial and residential space that incorporated a number of contractors and required a high level of expertise to both design and coordinate. From start to finish Michelle attended to every detail and made sure that things were done right. She created a wonderfully updated 1st floor office space for us and was able to breathe new life into a 2nd floor apartment that hadn't been touched since the 1940's. Her ability to blend old elements with necessary modern updates created a one of a kind space that we continue to get compliments on. Michelle is both professional and wonderfully positive and I would recommend her for any renovation project without reservation.

We highly recommend Michelle for your interior projects. She is enormously talented, extremely professional and a delight to work with.
Initially we contacted Michelle to assist with wall hangings. She totally exceeded our expectations with the speed of her work, her thoughtfulness on what should go where and importantly, her design expertise. While working on wall hangings, I asked Michelle how to re-fresh a couple of rooms. This is what really impressed me; her ability to make a few changes that really made a difference. She purchased light fixtures and linens; very reasonably priced and all of which made our house feel like a home.
Now when I walk into a room, it feels complete. She helped to remove clutter, emphasized what we liked, made subtle yet incredibly important changes to furniture layouts, re-did book shelves and countertop displays.
We feel very fortunate to have been introduced Michelle and are so pleased with her work. I'm sure you will too.

Michelle and Michael performed a miraculously painless partial kitchen remodel for us - some new cabinets and all new counter tops. After the tidy demolition, Michael installed temporary plywood counter tops so we could continue to use the kitchen uninterrupted while we waited for the new granite counter tops to be delivered. Almost the best part of the experience was that Michelle emptied the old cabinets involved and restocked the new ones when the job was finished. We literally did not have to lift a finger and are so pleased with the results.

Mariam-Webster defines "groovy" as marvelous, wonderful, excellent, hip, trendy. Since 1995 Michelle has brought her "Groovi" into my home, whether it be faux painting by rag in my sun room to designing curtains and pillows and selecting paint colors to match. She always brings enthusiasm, a keen eye to detail and a forward sense of color and fabric design while keeping in mind my sense of home. For the past 19 years each experience has truly been "groovy".

We are not sure where to even begin. Michelle and Michael have taken us through what could have been the most difficult transitions in our lives To say the least they are amazing.First we asked them to take our small apartment in Manhattan and do the impossible make it look larger and brighter ! We hoped to sell it and retire to our country home in Columbia County. We basically gave them a budget and they stuck to it . We gave them a deadline and it was completed on time... but first and foremost Michelle has an uncanny ability to read people .. meaning their taste, their style, their personalities... and translate that into a home that reflects who they are the minute you walk in. Within a short amount of time our small apartment had been transformed into a bright, spacious , warm and welcoming co-op which sold in 2 days. This led us to the daunting task of turning 2 homes into one in a very short time. Of course Michael and Michelle took on this project with committed enthusiasm, creative energy and a real understanding of not only what transformation our house needed but what a momentous change it was for us as a couple .The 15 year old country house had virtually gone untouched... there was no job too big or too small they couldn't handle.  Each and every paint color was painstakingly picked to be just right (Michelle is a color genius).  They were our kitchen designers. They bought us perfect new furniture to mix with old beloved pieces . Not only did they build in closets they organized them too. Our blended home was magnificent and our new adventure was about to begin. Michelle made our move so easy . She arranged for everything and knew where every piece of furniture and even our clothes went. Nothing was too hard or too much. Michelle and Mike even created two new pieces of art that we adore ... very personal and extremely special . (Groovi Michelle and Mike) will always be part of our lives and we will continue to utilize their unique talents for ongoing projects.

I met Michelle shortly after Groovi opened and we connected right away. I have said this often, "Michelle is my Muse". Not only is there a Groovi artifact in every room of two homes, but eventually the result of her artistic vision throughout. Now, years later, every purchase, every color decision, and even every attempt at art myself , has a requisite, inner consultation with her. "What would Michelle do?"

I own and operate an insurance agency in Chatham,NY. After many years in the same building, it was clear that we needed a "facelift" of the office to make it more updated, comfortable, and visually appealing. We also needed to do some renovations to make room for several new hires and planned future growth.
We were referred to Michelle by a satisfied client that she had recently helped. We knew that this project was outside the skillset of a team of insurance professionals, and would cost us valuable time and attention that needed to be focused on our customers and employees.
Michelle was great right from the beginning. She worked room-by-room to get a sense of what we liked and didn't like, and consulted with us on what our wants and needs for the office were. Along the way, Michelle was collaborative and always conscious of our overall budget and cost effectiveness of different options.
The end result of the project was better than we originally imagined. Michelle provided a sophisticated evolution on many pieces of decor that we already used, and provided a tasteful reimagining of the office overall. Michelle also took us out of our comfort zone on a few items that we are very happy with, but was accommodating if there was anything that we weren't comfortable with.
Lastly, Michelle helped oversee work that was being done by the contractors and vendors, and was immensely valuable for her coordination and critical eye.
If you are considering a significant renovation and design project, you won't be sorry to have Michelle in your corner!

I have known Mike for 40 years or more and he was always an imaginative, talented artist. Now, as Mike and Michelle, this dynamic duo are both my close friends and "interior advisors". Thanks so much for the help with my house guys. The colors blend and pop at the same time. What more could anyone ask for?

I have had the pleasure of being on the receiving end of Michelle's design and aesthetic talents for many years. She has wonderful taste and the ability to create very warm, fun and beautifully decorated rooms. I have alway felt very comfortable in expressing my view and my taste and she encourages me to agree or disagree with her design suggestions. I believe her ultimate goal is to please the client but also stretch the imagination and comfort zone of the person for whom she is working. She is truly an incredibly talented woman who knows what she is doing. I have referred a number of people to her and they too have been very satisfied with her work.

"Over the years, Michelle and Michael of Groovi have wonderfully transformed every room of our house. It now looks like we know something about artistic design, but actually we just know Michelle and Michael."
The Feltons, North Chatham

We met Michelle & Michael years ago when Michelle had her shop, Groovi, and became great friends. It was only natural that we turned to them for help when we re-did our kitchen and office. Michelle designed everything & it was all accomplished while we were away. We walked in and our jaws dropped. It was more than we could have ever dreamed. One project led to another which included redesigning the living room. When we discussed colors, I told Michelle that I hated the color orange and said it made me hostile. She told me that I needed to work on that. Today we have a wonderful orange zebra striped sofa in the living room that I love, so I guess I worked on that!
Next came an addition to our house that she and Michael undertook, again while we were away. We talked often, emailed & collaborated long distance. Again, they worked their amazing magic. When we returned, we stopped in our beautiful kitchen and poured ourselves a glass of wine before going to see what they had wrought. Again, our jaws fell open and we both almost dropped our wine glasses at the beautiful job they had done. The addition is incredible. They created the most beautiful bathroom I think I have ever seen!
Michelle & Michael helped us with the design of the garden fence and Michael built the most wonderful "Secret Garden" gate.
Sometimes I just walk through our beautiful home and pinch myself at it being "our home!" We trust them implicitly and would love to work with them again. I am lobbying for a "Man Cave" for Jim so he can put all his guitars and stuff in one place. I know just who can make that not only a reality, but a wonderful reality!
We consider them the ultimate professionals and dear friends.
Patricia Wann

Patricia and I have worked together as co-authors of a musical, as producer (her) and performer (me) in the theatre, daily in our home office on business, in dog shows (where she and Topper are in the ring and I'm the roadie), and on our home as she describes. So we're in our home a lot and the sensibility of it is important. Michelle and Michael, also a couple who work together, bring an ease of collaboration, inspiration, tradition, innovation and the skills to make our ideas, and theirs, a reality on our home projects.
They manage a lot of the details like materials and contractors. We're entirely comfortable with going away and leaving the job in their hands. We talk a lot as the process goes on and solve problems together. When we're home and they are working with us on a small project, it's always a great pleasure to have them walk in the door. They bring wonderful energy to a place we love.
In 2004 after my mother passed away in Tennessee, my sisters and I divided furniture, art, rugs, and other items and my share was moved to New York. The dining room table, an antique, came to us and we created our dining room around it under their expert guidance. was particularly keen on the room having its own feeling and flavor reflective of Patricia and me, different from my mother's dining room. Thus a happy ceramic pig appeared under an antique side table, and over the mantle, a nicely framed illustration of a crow wearing an overcoat and boots, walking through a field with a piece of straw in its mouth, lent another smile to the room. Both pieces of art had come from Groovi-perfect for the original atmosphere we were seeking. And there are many more examples. The pig motif extends to a large Michelle-painted cabinet in the atrium; hey, we live in the country-and our own collection of paintings and fine photography found just the right places in the right rooms.
Our house is pre-1850; the cabinetry in the new kitchen, living room, and bathroom is a testament to Michael's problem-solving with tricky spaces and his dedication to honoring existing molding and other traditional features with solutions of his own, and they're not only workable but beautiful. Michelle has a great sense of proportion, balance, color and texture and it's not always what you expect. We've learned a lot from both of them, ultimate professionals as Patricia says, and yes, dear friends.

Mike and Michelle... We have known both for years and it's so hard to decide what is more impressive... the couple or the genius. Both so warm, fun, loving and most definitely a welcome addition to our family. We have seen their work and are in awe with each project. We recently did a minor reno with paint and flooring at our house. I gave Michelle free reign on what to keep and where to keep it, only asking for a few cherished pieces to be incorporated. After years of collecting and inheriting some beautiful pieces, Michelle pared down the collection and strategically placed each one creating a whisper in each area that said "come in and relax here". It's been a few months now and every time I come into the house, I can't help but to say "aaaah, I'm home!' We are so lucky that they have shared their love and their talents.
